Patience for Pets, an Interactive 3D Game by Unity October - December 2019
While many people adore the cuteness and companionship of pets, some of them ignore the responsibility and sometimes negativity they need to undertake, for instance, cleaning up the mess created by their pets. This project intends to serve as an experiential interactive media for potential pet buyers to play before they buy or adopt pets and asks the potential pet buyers if they have a generous heart for their future pets.
Background
Abandoned pets are companion animals that can be either inadvertently or deliberately left alone on the property or streets, be re-homed to a friend or family member, or relinquished at an animal shelter by their owners. Pets are abandoned for a variety of reasons, including family disruption (divorce, death), foreclosure, economic problems, or minor behavioral issues. There are more than 200 million homeless dogs in the world. Every year in the U.S., there are over 6.5 million shelter animals including 3.2 million cats and 3.3 million dogs. Among them, around 1.5 million would be euthanized.
Background

According to the ASPCA’s National Rehoming Survey, pet problems are the most common reason that owners rehome their pets, accounting for 47% of rehomed dogs and 42% of rehomed cats. Pet problems were defined as problematic behaviors, aggressive behaviors, grew larger than expected, or health problems owner couldn’t handle.

Thus, it’s important for anyone thinking about adopting an animal to consider in advance how they will deal with potential issues so that they don’t end up adding to the numbers of abandoned animals.

Research

Research Key Insights
As the majority of people have kept or want to keep a pet mainly for reasons of cuteness and a good accompany, most people gave up or not want to keep a pet due to no stable residence and too much responsibility. The average intolerancy scores for most pet problematic behaviors are relatively high.

DESIGN OBJECTIVE
While people see the cuteness of pets online and want to keep a pet for a good accompany, many do not consider the responsibility they should undertake including tolerating problematic behaviors, taking care of pet illness. etc. Thus, I aim to create interactive media for potential pet buyers to experience before they buy or adopt pets so that they could reflect on if they have enough patience in advance.
